Guide

The time duration calculator is a tool that calculates the time that has passed between two dates and times. It also takes into account any break times. The result is given in hours and minutes as a number of hours as total minutes and as a decimal number of days.

Formula

The formula to calculate the time duration is simple: it is the end time minus the start time minus the break time.

duration=end timestart timebreak time\text{duration} = \text{end time} - \text{start time} - \text{break time}

If you are calculating the time for a shift or event that goes past midnight you need to use the next-day checkbox.

Example

Let us say you start work at 9:00 AM and finish at 5:30 PM. You also take a 30 minute break.

The time duration calculator will calculate the time you worked. First it calculates the time from 9:00 AM, to 5:30 PM which is 8.5 hours. Then it subtracts the 30 minute break which is 0.5 hours.

8.5 hours0.5 hours=8.0 hours8.5\text{ hours} - 0.5\text{ hours}=8.0\text{ hours}

So the result is 8 hours. This can also be given as 480 minutes or 0.3333 days.

Common uses

The time duration calculator has uses. Some of these include:

  • checking timesheets and the length of shifts
  • tracking study or focus sessions
  • planning events and trips
  • converting hours to decimal hours
